Warning – Is Your 1970’s House Full of Asbestos

With all the fears about mesothelioma, an asbestos-induced incurable cancer, we had a real shock just before Christmas.

We went for a week in Spain, and when we returned, we found our bedroom carpet was like a wet sponge. Looking up we saw a watermark right across our bedroom ceiling, and on the stairs and landing. Swooped down on the ground, we quickly saw the cause of this leak, a sticking ball valve in the main tank. Although there seemed to be no damageexcept for the stains on the ceiling, we though we better the demand for insurance in case there had been something more permanent damage to the roof.

Well, the answer I was from the insurance company mind-blowing …

They asked me what kind of ceiling, and I told them it was "Artex".

Silence …

"You know, it is asbestos in the ceiling," they told us, though our house was built in the mid-1970s

They said they wouldhave to send a specialist to check on the roof, and the cost of repair would be either repaired over $ 200 on the ceiling or several thousand when they found asbestos was present. Whatever the outcome, they would bill.

Now the specialist, arrived with his special mask and breathing apparatus, which verifies the ceiling, and in fact, they contain asbestos?

So, we would end with all of our bedroom furniture have dissipated andThen, the ceilings are removed in both our bedroom and landing, and a new fitted and the bedroom, hall, stairs and landing all renovated – all for $ 200 more on the insurance.

Talk about the complete destruction!

Luckily, we had built a 'Granny Annex "for my father, who died several years ago, so moved that we are in two weeks, while the decorators took over.

But – when the day came down to the limits of what is good Torchwood was nothing in our house. They came in a largeTrucks with generators and air conditioning, and all sorts of space age gadget. They closed all the doors upstairs, built out of our bedroom, a plastic airlock at the bottom of the stairs, and then two of them waddled out of her truck in what is lost in space suits complete with oxygen tanks, but saw the lock and went to destroy our blankets.

When she was gone we were left staring through our rafters on the outside roof tiles – Boy it was cold thatNight.

It's quite scary really, as over the years, we had our kitchen and dining room in a knock, smashing part of the ceiling in the process of drilling for TV cable, Ethernet cable, and finally go through the roof. Finally, why do we worry about the presence of asbestos? We thought that they no longer know what in the 1950s?

But that's not all …

While the supervisor was here, he saw our garage. "Did you know your garage is reacheddeadly asbestos foil under the roof of …?' Well. Here we go again. "Torchwood, we need you again …"

Do It Yourself-ers – beware – there is no cure for asbestos-induced cancer.
